Replace a New Jersey Drivers License
Drivers license replacement in New Jersey is a mandatory process for individuals who have a lost, stolen or destroyed license to operate a vehicle. You cannot drive legally in the state until you obtain the replacement license. Getting an NJ copy of drivers license is done in compliance with the rules and procedures set by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). In the event of a lost drivers license in New Jersey, drivers must appear personally at an NJ MVC location, and present the required documentation. Replacing drivers licenses in NJ is also available to out-of-state residents, only if they meet the eligibility requirements. How to Report a Lost or Stolen NJ Driver's License
In the case of a lost drivers license in New Jersey, drivers are encouraged to report their lost or stolen credentials to a law enforcement agency. Before applying for an NJ drivers license replacement, visit a local police station and file a report with the proper authorities. NJ drivers may also obtain a copy of the report and present it at your local MVC branch thereafter.
Replacing Your New Jersey Driver's License
Should you need to obtain an NJ DMV duplicate license, you must arrange an in-person visit with the local NJ MVC branch. Only NJ drivers currently residing out of state can replace drivers licenses by mail, provided they meet eligibility requirements. Getting a drivers license copy online in New Jersey is not an available option at the moment. Both replacement methods require licensees to pay the applicable fee in the amount of $11. MVC offices in New Jersey accept major credit/debit cards, checks, money orders and cash as payment methods for your convenience. The NJ MVC prohibits using a duplicate drivers license as a second or spare copy.
If you wish to receive a New Jersey drivers license replacement in person, you must first arrange a visit at a nearby NJ MVC location. In order to get a duplicate drivers license in NJ, drivers who appear personally at the MVC Agency are obliged to complete and submit a drivers license application form BA-208. Since the form is not available online at the moment, you may obtain the application at a DMV office instead. To complete the NJ drivers license replacement process, applicants must also make sure to have the proper payment on hand for the aforementioned replacement fee.
Out-of-State License Replacement
If you have a lost drivers license, or your license has been stolen or destroyed while out of state, you can apply for an NJ duplicate drivers license by mail. The state's Motor Vehicle Commission allows drivers currently residing out of New Jersey to replace their drivers license only if they meet the eligibility requirements. To be eligible to do so, you must satisfy the following conditions:
- Be a New Jersey licensee with privileges in good standing.
- Be out of the tri-state area for an extended amount of time.
- Have a lost drivers license for less than three years.
- Have a New Jersey digital driver license.
- Be a U.S. citizen and not have temporary visa status.
- Not have a Commercial Driver License class A, B, or C.
If drivers meet the above-mentioned requirements, they will be required to provide the necessary documentation. To complete the drivers license replacement in New Jersey, you must first write a letter providing an explanation on why you are unable to personally visit the NJ MVC office, along with the return date to New Jersey. Other NJ replacement drivers license documents include:
- A completed Application for Driver License (Form BA-208).
- Six points of identification (The list of documents is available on the official NJ MVC website.)
- Proof of permanent resident address.
- Current out-of-state/country address.
- A check or money order for $11 (cash is not accepted).
