Motorists must apply for a Wyoming salvage title certificate when they are owners of vehicles declared as salvaged. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) issues car salvage certificates which are used as proofs of ownership in various situations. However, prior to getting such titles, the WYDOT may require applicants to satisfy certain eligibility criteria.

Vehicle owners who choose to obtain a DMV salvage title may also have to meet a list of requirements and to provide the mandatory documentation as part of the application procedure. Moreover, motorists may also have to submit payment for the corresponding salvage title value and they may be mandated to have their vehicles inspected. To discover more information about how to get a salvage title in Wyoming, continue reading the following sections.

What is a Wyoming salvage title?

Owners of salvage title cars in Wyoming must become familiar with the definitions for salvage vehicles and titles before they begin the application procedure. A salvage certificate of title is a legal ownership document issued by the WYDOT to individuals who own vehicles that have been damaged, wrecked, or destroyed to that extent that they have been declared as a total loss. Therefore, a car salvage may be either a motor vehicle declared a total loss by an insurance agency, or a vehicle that endured damages in the amount exceeding 75 percent of its retail cash value.

Wyoming Salvage Title Eligibility Requirements

Prior to beginning the Wyoming salvage title application procedure, motorists may be required to satisfy certain eligibility criteria. For instance, they must own vehicles that meet the imposed WYDOT salvage requirements and that are either declared a total loss or are impossible to repair due to the enormous percentage of damages. Moreover, a salvage certificate of title may be issued to vehicles that have been operated less than eight years.

Note: Motorists may be ineligible to obtain a DMV salvage title in Wyoming when they own motor vehicles older than eight years of age, except if the vehicle has been previously issued a title that contained one of the following words: salvage, rebuilt, reconstructed, scrap, junk, nonrepairable, unrebuildable, parts only, or other similar word or symbol.

How to Get a Salvage Title in Wyoming

After vehicle owners satisfy the imposed eligibility criteria for getting a salvage title in Wyoming, they may begin with the application procedure. Either the vehicle owner or an insurance company, which obtained the ownership rights as a result of a settlement of an insurance claim, may apply for a salvage car title by completing the following:

  • Forward the endorsed title certificate to the county clerk that issued the title.
  • Complete an Application for Certificate of Title and VIN/HIN Inspection (form MV-300A) for a title certificate branded salvage.
  • Submit payment for the applicable fees.

In addition to the above-listed requirements for a salvage certificate of title, motorists may be requested to submit other documents, such as, for instance, a proof of the total loss status. However, to discover the additional papers that may be mandated under various circumstances, motorists are encouraged to contact the WYDOT before beginning the application procedure.

Salvage Car Inspections in Wyoming

Motorists who have obtained a rebuilt salvage title and rebuilt salvage decals will be required to have their vehicles inspected at a law enforcement agency. An agent of the law enforcement is supposed to perform two different inspections: rebuilt salvage vehicle decal inspection and vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection. At the end of the inspection, the agent should sign off on the certification of correct VIN number form, which is the same as the Application for Certificate of Title and VIN/HIN Inspection (form MV-300A).

This rebuilt salvage title application form is sent along with the rebuilt salvage vehicle decal. The law enforcement agent must inspect the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the vehicle and certify that the VIN number displayed on the vehicle is the correct one and that the inspection was conducted in Wyoming. The paperwork is then sent to the county clerk’s office where the title and plate procedures are conducted.

Wyoming Salvage Title Fees

The final requirement of the salvage title application procedure may mandate applicants to submit payment for the applicable titling fees to the WYDOT. Currently, the salvage title value in Wyoming is set to $15. However, fees are subject to constant changes. Therefore, motorists are encouraged to contact the WYDOT before making any payments for a salvage title, in order to avoid future inconveniences.

Motorists who conduct an inspection on their salvage title cars in Wyoming may be also required to pay certain fees for the inspections. Both the rebuilt salvage vehicle decal inspection and vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection cost $10 each if they are conducted separately. However, when vehicle owners decide to conduct both inspections at the same time, they can do so by paying only $10 for the two inspections.
