Knowing When to Take the Nebraska Driving Test

  1. The Nebraska written drivers test is made up of 25 questions. You must get at least 20 questions (80%) correct for a passing score.
  2. The cost to get a driver’s license for the first time in Nebraska is $10.50. This fee also applies for a first-time learners permit and for a first-time school permit.
  3. To take the official Nebraska written driving exam, you must be at least 14 years old. If you want to get a school permit to drive only to school, you must be at least 14 years and two months old.

Documents Needed for Noncitizens

Under federal US law, a driver’s license or a learner’s permit for a non-US citizen is given to candidates who fulfill local state testing requirements and prove that they reside in the country legally. The license validity cannot be longer than five years. Immigration documents must be checked against the US Citizenship and Immigration Services office through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlement (SAVE) program.

Accepted documents for non-US citizens include the following:

  • Original copy of the Proof of Lawful Presence in the United States
  • Unexpired non-US passport with appropriate immigration documents
  • Valid passport containing visa and valid I-94, I-551 stamp, or I-94 and applicable supporting documents
  • Resident Alien Card (Form I-551 or Form I-668)
  • Employment Authorization Card (Form I-766 or Form I-668A)
  • Refugee Travel Document (Form I-571)
  • LPR Reentry Permit (Form I-327)

After the Written Test

When you achieve a passing score on the Nebraska DMV written knowledge exam, you are ready to go forward and apply for your first learners permit. Next, prepare for the road skills test. New drivers need to have at least 20 hours of driving practice experience beforehand. When you book your DMV road skills test appointment, present a vision test certificate showing that you have a visual acuity of 20/40.

Note that the in-car hours of drivers education can be scheduled by contacting a driving school authorized to provide drivers ed in Nebraska. You need to have at least six hours of in-car experience.
