Documents Needed for Noncitizens

The state of Ohio allows both permanent residents who are non-US citizens and those foreign individuals requesting asylum in the United States to obtain drivers licenses. These applicants must provide the following:

  • A valid green card
  • A Social Security card, if one was assigned
  • An I-94 asylum document, if applicable
  • A proof of their residency in Ohio, such as:
    • A recent utility bill
    • A bank statement
    • Insurance documents
    • A rental/mortgage agreement

    • Medical documents

After the Written Test

After you successfully pass the Ohio written driving exam, you have to hold on to your temporary learner’s permit for at least six months before you can apply for your road skills exam. The Ohio BMV gives test takers four chances to pass the road skills exam. After the fourth failed attempt, you will have to wait six months before you can retake the exam. Also, be prepared to undergo a vision screening. You must have a visual acuity of 20/40, with or without corrective lenses, in order to drive in Ohio.

In order to get an OH driver’s license, you must pass a drivers ed course at a licensed school, which includes 24 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours behind the wheel, and you must complete at least 50 hours of total driving, including 10 hours of driving at night.
