The only way to minimize the risk of failure is to study often and effectively for the MN written drivers exam. To start studying, DMV.com encourages you to look to the Minnesota Driver’s Manual. This handbook includes sections on all of the important kinds of road rules and regulations that have been established in the state. To add to your knowledge and understanding of these materials, DMV.com has created its own unique supplemental study aid: the Study Guide and Practice Test preparation packet.

Documents Needed for Noncitizens

To obtain a temporary learner’s permit or a driving license in Minnesota as a non-US citizen, you must meet the identification requirements that apply to citizens. Namely, you must submit one primary document and one secondary document from the approved list. A few examples include:

  • For primary documents:
    • Employment Authorization card that features a photo (I-688 or I-766)
    • Permanent Resident card (I-551)
    • Resident Alien card (I-151)
  • For secondary documents:
    • Another primary document
    • Government employee ID card
    • Current secondary school ID card

Also, non-US citizens may be asked to prove MN residency. Approved documents include:

  • Mortgage/lease statements.
  • Utility bills.
  • Insurance papers.
  • Pay stubs.
  • Bank statements.

After the Written Test

Once the written driving exam is out of the way, the Minnesota DMV will issue you a learner’s permit, which you must hold for a specific amount of time. Drivers who are 18 years of age or younger must hold their permit for six months, while drivers who are 19 or older are only required to hold their permit for three months. Once this time has elapsed, you can take the Minnesota DMV road skills test.

You have two chances to pass the road skills exam with your first application. Third and subsequent attempts will come with an additional fee. To avoid this charge and to ensure that you get your permit on your first try, practice your driving skills early and often before you finally decide to set up a driving skills test appointment.

Also, be sure to get corrective eyewear if your sight is below a certain mark. The MN DMV requires drivers to have a visual acuity of 20/40 in order to operate a motor vehicle.

Note that Minnesota drivers must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel training to get an MN driver’s license.
