How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in Utah

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Utah Motorcycle License can be renewed online, by mail or in person at any driver license office in the State. The Utah Department of Motor Vehicles notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Your Utah motorcycle license is valid for five years and will generally expire on your birthday. If you are under 21 years of age, your license will expire on your 21st birthday. You can renew your license up to six months before expiration. There is no grace period in Utah. If your license expires, you have to take the knowledge test and the road test again.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  • Your expiring motorcycle license or Proof of Identity if the expiring license is not available.
  • If your name has changed, documentation of the name change is required.
  • Renewal fee payable by cash or check (credit cards not accepted).
  • You may need to take a vision test.

TO RENEW VIA THE INTERNET

You are eligible to renew online only if you renewed in person the last time and if you have a good driving record (no suspensions, revocations and not more than four reportable traffic violations in the previous five years). If you are eligible it will be clearly noted on your renewal card. To apply online you need:
  • The renewal notice mailed by the Driver License Division.
  • A valid credit card to make the payment.

TO RENEW BY U.S. MAIL

You are eligible to renew by mail only if you renewed in person the last time and if you have a good driving record (no suspensions, revocations and not more than four reportable traffic violations in the previous five years). If you are eligible it will be clearly noted on your renewal card. For drivers who qualify, renewal can be completed by mail.

Send the completed renewal by mail application which you will receive with the renewal notification, along with the fee to:

P.O. Box 144501
Salt Lake City, UT 84114-4501
Payment instructions will be provided with the notification. Note: If you are renewing an ‘old style' license, a renewal sticker will be mailed to you, but if you are renewing a digital license, you will get a new license.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Utah Motorcycle License can be replaced in person at any driver license office in the State.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must:
  • Bring proper identification. The state of Utah requires that you present two pieces of primary ID or one piece of primary ID and one piece of secondary ID when applying for a duplicate motorcycle license.
  • Pass a vision test and have a new photograph taken at the driver license office.
  • Bring the correct fee. Please contact your driver license office to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
  • If your motorcycle license will expire within the next six months, you can renew your license instead of applying for a replacement.
Note: Utah residents who are temporarily out of state will not be able to apply for a duplicate until they return to Utah, as the application needs to be made in person.
