How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in Hawaii

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Hawaii Motorcycle License can be renewed by mail or in person at any driver license location in your county of residence in the State. The expiration date of your motorcycle license is mentioned on the license itself.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Your Hawaii motorcycle license will generally expire on your birthday. The expiration year depends on your age when the expiring license was issued or last renewed. For drivers under 21, the license is valid for 4 years, for drivers between 21-71, it is valid for 6 years and for drivers 72 and older, it is valid for 2 years. It is advisable to renew your motorcycle license before the date on which it will expire. You can renew your license any time in the six months leading up to its expiration. There is no grace period in Hawaii and your driving privileges expire if you do not renew.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  • Your expiring motorcycle license or proper identification documents if the expiring license is not available.
  • The renewal fees, which is different in each county and depends on the validity of the license as well. The fees range between $5 and $18.
  • You need your vision tested, picture taken and be fingerprinted.

TO RENEW BY U.S. MAIL

You need to:
  • Send a letter requesting to renew your license to the specific county
    • Include details like full name, date of birth, address, Social Security Number, license expiry date and copy of current license or its number.
    • The office will send you back a packet containing a Driver License Application, Medical and Vision testing forms, a Signature form and a Thumbprint impression form.
  • Return the completed forms to the office.
You will be issued a new motorcycle license if your record is clear. Your renewed license will have "valid without a Photo" printed across it, if your photograph is not in the database. You are permitted two consecutive renewals by mail. The mailing addresses for each county are as follows:

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Hawaii Motorcycle License can be replaced in person at any driver license location in your county of residence in the State.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must:
  • Bring proper identification. The state of Hawaii requires that you present one piece of ID with name and date of birth such as a certified birth certificate, a marriage certificate, alien registration or military ID, and one ID with proof of social security number when applying for a duplicate motorcycle license or identification card. For a complete list of acceptable IDs, refer to your county's driver licensing website.
  • Bring the correct fee. Normally, there is a $5 cash fee for replacing a lost, stolen, or mutilated license. Please contact the driver license location in your county of residence to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
  • If your motorcycle license will expire within the next six months, you can renew your license instead of applying for a replacement.
Note: Hawaii residents who are temporarily out of state and unable to apply in person may apply for a temporary duplicate motorcycle license through mail or fax. Such persons may include military personnel or students who are either out of the state or country, among others. You will have to mail a letter of request, along with the fee, to the Driver Licensing Department of your county. The letter must include your name, social security number, date of birth, mailing address, email, reason for loss and signature. Once the request if received and processed, a valid-without-photo motorcycle license will be mailed to you. Upon return to Hawaii, you should visit a driver licensing office in person to obtain a permanent replacement license with your photo.
