How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in New York

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A New York Motorcycle License can be renewed online, by mail or in person at any DMV office in the State. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail, approximately two months in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Your New York motorcycle license is generally valid for five years and will expire on your birthday. You can renew your license any time in the year leading up to its expiration or up to two years after the expiration, without taking the road test or the knowledge test.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

A completed renewal application form (MV-44).
Renewal fee, payable by cash, check or credit card.
Form MV-619 completed by an eye-care professional, or you will be required to take a vision test.

TO RENEW VIA THE INTERNET

You may renew your license online up to a year before expiration or within two years after expiration. You cannot renew online if your driving privileges are suspended/revoked or if you do not meet the eligibility criteria.

To renew online, you will need:

Client ID Number and Document Number as stated on your current license.
Date of birth, Social Security number and zip code.
Form MV-619 completed by an eye care professional (Vision test).
A valid e-mail address where you will receive confirmation of renewal.
A Credit card (Visa, American Express, MasterCard or Discover) to make the payment.

Note: You cannot change your address online.

It can take up to four weeks for you to receive your renewed license by mail.

TO RENEW BY U.S. MAIL

When you renew by mail, you should prepare and/or complete:

The renewal reminder form mailed by DMV or the MV-44, renewal application in the absence of the renewal reminder.
MV-619 or proof of a vision test from another state.
Clear photocopies of proof of identification.
A money order or check for the renewal fee.

Mail all the documents to:

Albany, NY 12220-0668.

The renewed motorcycle license will arrive by mail within four weeks. If you wish to receive it faster, include a pre-paid, pre-addressed express mail package with your application.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A New York Motorcycle License can be replaced online, by mail or in person at any DMV office in the State.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

You must replace your motorcycle license in person if it was lost or stolen due to an illegal act, in order to waive the replacement fee. Along with your replacement application, get form MV-78B (only available from the police) completed by a police agency to show that your license was stolen.

If you replace the license online or by mail, the replacement fee cannot be waived.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must bring:

A completed replacement application form (MV-44).
Replacement fee of $15, payable by cash, check or credit card.
Original form MV-78B completed by a police agency, if the license was stolen, to waive the replacement fee.

TO REPLACE VIA THE INTERNET

You may replace your motorcycle license online, unless your driving privileges are suspended/revoked or if you do not meet the eligibility criteria.

To replace online, you will need:

Client ID Number or Name as stated on your previous license.
Date of birth, Social Security number and zip code.
A valid e-mail address where you will receive confirmation of replacement order.
A Credit card (Visa, American Express, MasterCard or Discover) to make the payment of $15 for the replacement.

It can take up to four weeks for you to receive your duplicate license by mail.

TO REPLACE BY U.S. MAIL

When you replace by mail, you should prepare and/or complete:

MV-44, replacement application.
Clear photocopies of proof of identification.
A money order or check for the replacement fee of $15.
