How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in North Dakota

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A North Dakota Motorcycle License can be renewed in person at any Driver license location in the State. The North Dakota Department of Transportation notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Your North Dakota motorcycle license is valid for 4 years and expires on your birthday. Your North Dakota motorcycle license can be renewed as early as 10 months prior to its expiration date. If your motorcycle license expired more than a year ago, you have to take the road and knowledge test.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  • Your expiring motorcycle license or acceptable proof of name and date of birth if the expiring license is not available.
  • Relevant documents like court order, government issued marriage certificate, etc. if there is a name change. An address change can be made online.
  • Your Social Security number.
  • The renewal proper identification.
  • A vision test will be required while renewing your motorcycle license.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A North Dakota Motorcycle License can be replaced in person at any Driver license location in the State.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must:

  • Bring proper identification. The state of North Dakota requires that you present proof of name and date of birth.
  • Bring the correct proper identification. Please contact your Driver license location to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
  • If your motorcycle license will expire within the next 10 months, you can renew your license instead of applying for a replacement.

Note: North Dakota residents who are temporarily out of state and unable to apply in person may apply for a temporary duplicate motorcycle license by emailing NDDOT at dl@nd.gov with their name, date of birth and fax number. If no fax number is available, then the applicant will have to bear overnight shipping charges. The temporary license will be processed and sent in approximately three business days.
