How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in Colorado

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Colorado Motorcycle License can be renewed by mail or in person at any DMV driver license office in the State. The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

If you are 22 or older, you may renew your motorcycle license any time prior to the expiration date, but persons turning 21 cannot renew the license until their birthday. If your motorcycle license has expired for less than one year, you do not require a driving or knowledge test. If it has expired more than one year ago, you need to complete both knowledge and driving tests, and meet proof of identification. For military personnel, a three-year automatic extension is done, when out of state, upon presentation of military orders or ID along with the license.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  • Your expiring motorcycle license or Proof of Identity if the expiring license is not available.
  • If your name has changed, documentation of the name change is required.
  • A here of $21.00 is valid for five-year renewal.

TO RENEW BY U.S. MAIL

When you renew by mail, you should complete the eligibility form. This checks your eligibility to renew by mail. You cannot renew by mail if you are:
  • Under age 21.
  • Over age 61.
  • Renewing a commercial driver's license (CDL).
  • Want to replace your photo.
Mail the Renewal Application along with the correct fee to:
Colorado Department of Revenue
1375 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80261- 0017
The renewed motorcycle license will arrive by mail within four weeks.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must bring:
  • identification. The state of Colorado requires that you present documents that prove your name, age, identity and legal US presence.
  • The correct fee. Normally, there is a $7.50 fee for replacing a lost, stolen, or mutilated motorcycle license for the first time. For subsequent replacements it is $14. Please contact your DMV driver license office to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
