How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in West Virginia

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A West Virginia Motorcycle License can be renewed in person at any driver exam station in the State. The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail, approximately two months in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Your West Virginia motorcycle license generally expires on your birthday. If your license has expired for more than six months, you will have to take the knowledge and skills tests like any first time applicant. West Virginia has introduced the ‘drive for five' program under which all drivers' licenses will expire at an age divisible by five (i.e. 25, 30, 35 and so on). The new license is generally valid for five years, but if your current license expires at an age not divisible by five, then the expiry of your new license will be adjusted (for 3-7 years) so that it does so. For example if your current license expires at age 28, you will be issued a seven year license. For more details, see.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must bring:

  • Bring proper identification. The state of West Virginia requires that you present one piece of ID from an approved list and one proof of residency.
  • Persons under the age of 18 must bring a valid school enrollment form.
  • Bring the correct see. Please contact your driver exam station to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
  • If your motorcycle license is close to expiry, you can renew your license instead of applying for a replacement.

Note: West Virginia residents who are temporarily out of state and unable to apply in person may call the DMV at (800) 642-9066 or at (304) 558-3900. Depending on your license expiry, the DMV may advise you to renew your license instead of applying for a duplicate. The DMV may also issue a certified driving record to be kept until a duplicate can be obtained in person at a DMV office.
