How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in Washington DC
HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE
A Washington DC Motorcycle License can be renewed online or in person at any DMV office in the District. The Washington DC Department of Motor Vehicles notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail, approximately two months in advance.
WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE
Your DC motorcycle license is valid for five years. Make sure to renew your DC motorcycle license on time because if you wait 90 days after expiration to renew, then you have to take the knowledge test. If you renew 180 days after expiration, you have to take the knowledge test as well as the road test.
TO RENEW IN PERSON
You must bring:
- Your expiring DC motorcycle license or if it is not available, proof of name and date of birth and SSN.
- A completed and signed Driver's License and Voter's Registration form.
- If your name or address has changed, documentation of name change and address change is required.
- Renewal fee payable by cash, money order or credit card (VISA, MasterCard or Discover only).
TO RENEW VIA THE INTERNET
You can renew online if your motorcycle license has a digital photograph and signature (issued since August 2000) and if you meet the other online. To renew online you need:- Your motorcycle license number and the control number from your renewal notice. (If you don't have it then you need to provide your first name, last name, date of birth and your Social Security number).
- A valid credit card to make the renewal fee payment (Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards only).

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.TO REPLACE IN PERSON
You must:- Download, complete and bring the DC Driver's license or Identification Card Application Form.
- Bring proper identification. The District of Washington DC requires that you present proof of identity, Social Security number and residence (if it has changed).
- Bring the correct fee. Cash, checks or credit cards (American Express is not accepted) are the only forms of payment accepted. Please contact your service location to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
- If your motorcycle license will expire soon, you can renew your license instead of applying for a replacement.
TO REPLACE VIA THE INTERNET
You can apply for a duplicate motorcycle license online on the DMV website; if it is not due to expire in less than ten days. To replace online, you will need:- Your motorcycle license number.
- Name, date of birth and Social Security number.
- A major credit card, other than American Express, to pay the renewal fee.

- DC residents residing temporarily farther than 200 miles from the DC District border can apply for an Absentee Driver's License Renewal.
