How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in Washington DC

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Washington DC Motorcycle License can be renewed online or in person at any DMV office in the District. The Washington DC Department of Motor Vehicles notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail, approximately two months in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Your DC motorcycle license is valid for five years. Make sure to renew your DC motorcycle license on time because if you wait 90 days after expiration to renew, then you have to take the knowledge test. If you renew 180 days after expiration, you have to take the knowledge test as well as the road test.

You must bring:

You can renew online if your motorcycle license has a digital photograph and signature (issued since August 2000) and if you meet the other online. To renew online you need:
  • Your motorcycle license number and the control number from your renewal notice. (If you don't have it then you need to provide your first name, last name, date of birth and your Social Security number).
  • A valid credit card to make the renewal fee payment (Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards only).
The new motorcycle license will arrive by mail to the address on record within 10 days. Note: You cannot renew online if you renewed online the last time and you cannot change your name or address online. In such cases you have to renew in person with original documents at a DMV service location.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Washington DC Motorcycle License can be replaced online or in person at any DMV office in the District.

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

You can apply for a duplicate motorcycle license online on the DMV website; if it is not due to expire in less than ten days. To replace online, you will need:
  • Your motorcycle license number.
  • Name, date of birth and Social Security number.
  • A major credit card, other than American Express, to pay the renewal fee.
The duplicate motorcycle license will be mailed to the address in the record.
