How to Apply for a New Driver's License in Washington DC
You can apply for a new driver's license at any service location, except for the Adjudication Services and Inspection Station in Washington DC. Obtain a DC Driver's Handbook to familiarize with the driving rules and regulations.
NEW DRIVERS AND FIRST TIME APPLICANTS
- For individuals under age 21, the District by default gets them enrolled under the GRAD Program. Any individual under 18 years should provide parental consent.
- If aged 21 years and above, to be eligible to obtain a Washington DC driver's license you:
- Need to duly fill and submit the Driver's License and Voter's Registration form.
- Must take and pass the eye test, skills road test and knowledge test. See Practice Tests and Driver's Handbook for more information on the written examination. Driver education programs can help individuals prepare for their road test.
- Must provide proof of Washington DC residency.
- Must provide proof of identification, SSN, DC Residency and ability to drive.
NEW RESIDENTS
Be sure to surrender your existing license from another state, before applying for a DC license. US Citizens are eligible for a driver's license for up to 5 years. Non-US Citizens residing in Washington DC may apply for a Washington DC driver's license, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. A Non-US Citizen may obtain a driver's license if they have at least 6 months of valid US Visa stay. A temporary driver's license or ID card is issued for those with INS Notice of Action. However, the District does not grant license to those on Visitor Visa. Individuals with out-of-country driver's license can apply for US driver's license after meeting the necessary requirements.FEES
A first time driver's license costs $39. You can check on the appropriate fee for obtaining a Washington DC driver's license, depending on the type and the time period for which it is issued. The DC DMV accepts payment in the form of cash, money order or credit card (VISA, MasterCard or Discover. DMV does not accept American Express).LEARNER'S LICENSE
