How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in Montana

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Montana Motorcycle License can be renewed by mail or in person at any driver exam station in the State. The Montana Motor Vehicle Division notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail, approximately two months in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Your Montana motorcycle license will generally expire on your birthday. The expiration year depends on your age. For drivers under 21, the license will expire on your 21st birthday, for drivers aged 21-67, the license is valid for 8 years (four years if last renewed by mail), for drivers aged 68-74, the license will expire on your 75th birthday, and for drivers aged 75 and older, the license is valid for 4 years. It is advisable to renew your motorcycle license before the birthday on which it will expire. You can renew your license any time in the six months leading up to its expiration. Your driving privileges expire on midnight of your birthday if you do not renew. However, you will still have an additional three months to renew your license without taking the road test or the knowledge test.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  • Your expiring motorcycle license or proper identification if the expiring license is not available.
  • If your name has changed, documentation of the Name change documentation is required.
  • The renewal fee payable by cash or check (credit cards not accepted). In some rural locations where licensing services are limited, a pre-paid receipt from the county treasurer's office is required instead.
You will be issued a temporary motorcycle license at the driver exam station, after which the renewed license will arrive by mail within four to six weeks.

TO RENEW BY U.S. MAIL

Renewal by mail is available only to residents of the following counties that do not offer driver license services: Carter, Garfield, Golden Valley, Jefferson, Judith Basin, Madison, Petroleum, Prairie, Treasure and Wibaux. For drivers in these counties, the renewal can be completed by mail, but the subsequent renewal should be done at a driver exam station. When you renew your motorcycle license by mail, you should prepare and/or complete: Mail all the documents to:
Motor Vehicle Division
Montana Department of Justice
303 N. Roberts
P.O. Box 201430
Helena, MT 59620-1430
The renewed motorcycle license will arrive by mail within four to six weeks.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Montana Motorcycle License can be replaced in person at any driver exam station in the State.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must:
  • Bring proper identification. The state of Montana requires that you present two pieces of primary ID, or one piece of primary ID and one piece of secondary ID when applying for a duplicate motorcycle license.
  • Bring the correct fee payable by cash or check. Credit cards are not accepted. Please contact your local driver exam station to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
  • If your motorcycle license will expire within the next six months, you can renew your license instead of applying for a duplicate.
Note: Montana residents who are temporarily out of state and unable to apply in person can call (406)-444-4590 or email mvd@mt.gov for the correct paperwork. Military personnel may refer to the section on Military Personnel on the MVD website.
