How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in Rhode Island

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Rhode Island Motorcycle License can be renewed in person at any DMV office in the State. The Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail, approximately three weeks in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Rhode Island motorcycle licenses normally have a validity of five years from the date of issue and two years if you are over seventy years of age. If your license expired over 3 years ago, you need to take a fresh knowledge test and road test for a new license.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  • Your current motorcycle license and renewal form received in the mail.
  • Proof of residency in case a change of address is required on the license.
  • The renewal fee payable by cash or personal checks.
No appointment is necessary at the DMV office. You will initially be issued a 60 day temporary motorcycle license while your regular license is being processed. The latter will then be mailed to your residence.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

A Rhode Island Motorcycle License can be replaced in person at any DMV office in the State.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must:
  • Bring proper identification. The state of Rhode Island requires that you present one piece of identity document with date of birth and name, and one piece of signature document when applying for a duplicate motorcycle license or identification card.
  • Bring the correct fee. Please contact your local DMV Office to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
  • If you are close to the expiry of your motorcycle license, you can renew your license instead of applying for a replacement.
Note: Rhode Island residents who are temporarily out of state and unable to apply in person may apply for a duplicate motorcycle license through the mail. Such persons may include military personnel or students who are either out of the state or country, among others.
  • Prepare a duplicate-request affidavit explaining the reason for your inability to appear in person, and have it notarized.
  • Obtain a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check or money order for the correct fee made payable to: Department of Motor Vehicles. Please contact the DMV at (401) 462-5808 to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
