How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in New Mexico
HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE
A New Mexico Motorcycle License can be renewed in person at any MVD field office in the State. The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail in advance.
WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE
Your New Mexico motorcycle license is valid for four or eight years until you are 75 years of age. After 75, you have to renew every year. You can renew your license anytime in the 90 days prior to expiration or within 30 days after it expires.
TO RENEW IN PERSON
You must bring:
- Your expiring motorcycle license or proof of identity if the expiring license is not available.
- Renewal fees of $18 for a four year renewal and $34 for an eight year renewal. There is no renewal fee if you are 75 year or older but you have to renew every year.
- You may need to take a knowledge test and a vision test.
- In some cases you may even have to take a driving test.
HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE
A New Mexico Motorcycle License can be replaced in person at any MVD field office in the State.
WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE
You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.
TO REPLACE IN PERSON
- You don't need to carry any identification documents to replace your motorcycle license. The state of New Mexico allows for the use your âenhanced driver's license' photo from the MVD database as proof of identity and identification number in case of replacement of a lost, damaged or stolen motorcycle license.
- Bring the correct fee. Normally, there is an $18 fee for replacing a lost, stolen, or mutilated four-year license and a $34 fee for replacing an eight-year license. Please contact your local MVD office to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
- You will first be issued a temporary extension which is valid for 45 days from the date of issue. Meanwhile your new motorcycle license will be mailed to you in about 15 days.
- If your motorcycle license will expire within the next 90 days, you can renew your license instead of applying for a replacement.
Note: New Mexico residents who are temporarily out of state and unable to apply in person may apply for a temporary motorcycle license valid for 30 days by calling (888) 683-4636. Once you return to New Mexico you can visit the nearest MVD office to get a permanent replacement motorcycle license.
