How to Renew/Replace a Motorcycle License in Indiana

HOW TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

An Indiana Motorcycle License can be renewed in person at any BMV license branch in the State. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles notifies owners of the expiration date of their motorcycle license by mail in advance.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

Your Indiana motorcycle license will generally expire on your birthday. The expiration year depends on your age. For drivers under 18, the license expires on the 21st birthday, for drivers aged 18-75, license is valid for 4 years, for drivers aged 75-85, the license is valid for 3 years; and for drivers 85 and older, the license is valid for 2 years. It is advisable to renew your motorcycle license before the birthday on which it will expire. You can renew your license any time in the year leading up to its expiration. Your driving privileges expire on midnight of your birthday if you do not renew. A fee of $5 is charged if you renew after your license expires.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  • Your expiring motorcycle license or proof of identification if the expiring license is not available.
  • If your name has changed, a court issued order of the name change is required.
  • If your address has changed, you will need to provide proof of the same (a computer generated document like a utility bill or paycheck stub with your new address and name will do).
  • The renewal fee.
  • A standard vision screening is mandatory to renew your license.
  • For a license expired for more than 2 years, it is necessary to also clear the knowledge test. For a license expired for more than 3 years, it is necessary to clear the knowledge and driving test with the vision test.
You will be issued a temporary license at the driver exam station, after which the renewed motorcycle license will arrive by mail within four to six weeks. Note: If your license has expired while you are outside Indiana, you can request a 90 day extension. If you are living outside Indiana and have to renew your motorcycle license, you can apply for a photo-exempt license.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

An Indiana Motorcycle License can be replaced in person at any BMV license branch in the State.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

You must replace your motorcycle license if your original license has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

TO REPLACE IN PERSON

You must:
  • Bring proper identification. The state of Indiana requires that you present one piece of primary ID and one piece of secondary ID when applying for a duplicate motorcycle license.
  • You must also provide proof of your Social Security number or proof of ineligibility of the same.
  • Bring the correct fee. Please contact your BMV license branch to confirm the fee before applying in person, since fees may vary.
  • If your motorcycle license will expire within the next one year, you can renew your license instead of applying for a replacement.
Note: Indiana residents who are temporarily out of state and unable to apply in person may apply for a verification letter which will have a validity period of 90 days.
  • Download and complete the application form from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles website.
  • Verification letter is free of cost
Mail the completed form, along with your payment to:
