How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration in West Virginia

In West Virginia vehicle registration must be renewed each year. The West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles notifies vehicle owners 30 days before the expiration date of their vehicle registration by mail. Vehicle registrations can be renewed before the expiration date through the mail or in person.

REGISTRATION RENEWAL BY U.S. MAIL

Send the completed registration renewal form (you receive it with the renewal notice sent to you) along with insurance information, personal property tax receipt and the appropriate fee to the address given on the registration renewal notice.

  • If you fail to receive a renewal notice, you can renew by submitting a copy of the vehicle's old registration card along with insurance information, personal property tax receipt and the fee. This can be done by mail or in person at DMV office.
  • If you don't have property tax receipt, contact your County Assessor or the nearest County courthouse for information.

REGISTRATION RENEWAL IN PERSON

  1. Locate the DMV office in your area. If you are registering a passenger vehicle or a motorcycle, you can also visit a County Sheriff's office.
  2. Bring the registration renewal form (you will get the form with the renewal notice or you can get it at the local DMV office), along with insurance information, personal property tax receipt and the fee for the renewal.
  3. Fees for registration are mentioned in the application form. (Payment by cash, check or credit card is usually accepted)

FEES

Registration charges for passenger vehicles and trucks weighing less than 8000 lbs is $30.

  1. Before renewal, check for errors in the pre-printed vehicle renewal notice that arrived in the mail.
