How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration in Alabama

The Alabama Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division notifies vehicle owners of the expiration date of their vehicle registration by mail for most counties. Vehicle registrations can be renewed before the expiration date either through the mail for some counties, using the MVD's online service in some counties, or in person. Registrations have to be renewed annually (even in the absence of a renewal notice) to avoid a $15 penalty. A person's first letter of the last name determines his/her month of registration renewal following the staggered system of registration used in Alabama.
