How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration in North Dakota

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) notifies vehicle owners of the expiration date of their vehicle registration by mail. The ND Motor Vehicle Division determines the expiration date of your vehicle based on date of sale or the first date the vehicle was used on North Dakota highways. Vehicle registrations can be renewed before the expiration date either through the mail or using the DMV's online service, or in person.

REGISTRATION RENEWAL BY U.S. MAIL

  • Send the completed registration renewal form along with the appropriate payment to:

    North Dakota Department of Transportation,

REGISTRATION RENEWAL VIA THE INTERNET

  1. Go to the NDDOT Motor Vehicle Registration Renewal System Online Services website.
  2. Keep your Registration/ Renewal card ready.
  3. Have your credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) or debit card (MasterCard or VISA) handy to pay for the renewal. Note: There is no online service available for changes to the current vehicle license. For further information contact ND Motor Vehicle Division at (701) 328 2725.

REGISTRATION RENEWAL IN PERSON

  1. Locate the MVD office in your area.
  2. Bring the registration renewal form along with the appropriate fee.

FEES

Registration for different categories of vehicles in North Dakota will have different fees. A penalty of $20 may be applied after expiry date.

FOR CORRECTIONS

  1. Before renewal, check for errors in the pre-printed vehicle renewal notice that arrived in the mail.
  2. For correction or change of address, you can use the ‘change' section of the application form or mail the correct information to MVD. Changes to the current vehicle license cannot be made online.
