How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration in Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles notifies vehicle owners of the expiration date of their vehicle registration by mail. Vehicle registrations can be renewed before the expiration date through the mail, using the DMV's online service, or in person.

REGISTRATION RENEWAL BY U.S. MAIL

  • Send the completed registration renewal form (if you did not receive a renewal form or if you lost it, you can download a substitute renewal form) and the appropriate payment to:

REGISTRATION RENEWAL VIA THE INTERNET

  1. Go to the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles Online Services website.
  2. Have your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express) or debit card (MasterCard or VISA) handy to pay for the renewal. Apart from the registration fee, $1 is charged as service fee.
  3. Emission tests have to be conducted if needed (indicated on renewal notice) and you need to wait 24hrs after passing the emission test to renew your registration online
You can not renew you license online if:
  1. You do not have your RRN or Renewal Reference Number (listed on your renewal card).
  2. There are corrections to your address, vehicle details or license plate.

REGISTRATION RENEWAL IN PERSON

  1. Locate the DMV office or service center in your area.
  2. Bring the registration renewal form, along with cash or check (credit cards are accepted only for online or phone transactions) to pay for the renewal.

FEES

Registration for different categories of vehicles in Wisconsin will have different fees that range from $15 to $106 as seen here.
