How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration in North Carolina

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) notifies vehicle owners of the expiration date of their vehicle registration by mail. Vehicle registrations can be renewed before the expiration date either through the mail, using the DMV's online service, or in person.

REGISTRATION RENEWAL BY U.S. MAIL

  • Send the completed registration renewal form and the appropriate payment along with a $1 postage fee to:
    NC Division of Motor Vehicles
    Post Office Box 29620
    Raleigh, N.C. 27626-0620    

REGISTRATION RENEWAL VIA THE INTERNET

  1. Go to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles Online Services website.
  2. The license plate number and the title number are needed.
  3. Have your Visa or MasterCard credit/debit card handy to pay for the renewal.
  4. There is no additional fee for online renewals.

REGISTRATION RENEWAL IN PERSON

  1. Locate the Vehicle and License Plate Renewal Office in your area.
  2. Bring the registration renewal form along with a credit card, check, money order or cash to pay for the renewal.
  3. In the absence of the renewal form, carry your license plate number as well as insurance details.

FEES

Registration for different categories of vehicles in North Carolina will have different fees varying from $11 to over $50 as seen [ here].

FOR CORRECTIONS

  1. Before renewal, check for errors in the pre-printed vehicle renewal notice that arrived in the mail.
  2. If you do not receive the registration renewal form, call (919) 715-7000.
  3. For correction or change of address, fill in the [ address change form] and mail it within 60 days of your move to:

  4. For any other error, visit your local DMV Office.

My vehicle inspection date is not until 10/31. Can I renew my registration now (10/01), before I get my car inspected?

I am currently deployed in Afghanistan and need to re-register my Vehicles. I need to get a hold of the DMV in Fayetteville NC and have them reset or do something with the online thing since I am unable to get my vehicles inspected. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Yes. You are responsible for keeping up with your vehicle registration renewal date even if you don't get notice in the mail. Sorry.

do I have to get my car inspected in NC before I re-register it or can I get it inspected in another State?
