How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration in Michigan
The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) office notifies vehicle owners 45 days in advance of the expiration date of their vehicle registration by mail. Vehicle registrations can be renewed before the expiration date either by telephone, through the mail, using the SOS's online service, or in person.
REGISTRATION RENEWAL BY TELEPHONE
You can use a touchtone phone to renew your registration. You will need a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card) to pay for the renewal transaction. The procedure takes less than 5 minutes.
- Have your credit card, registration renewal notice and the PIN handy before the call.
- Call the toll free number (517) 334-9444.
- Follow the instructions of the automated attendant to complete the registration renewal.
REGISTRATION RENEWAL BY U.S. MAIL
- Send the completed registration renewal form and the appropriate payment to:

REGISTRATION RENEWAL VIA THE INTERNET
- Go to the Michigan Secretary of State Online Renewal Services.
- Have your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) handy to pay for the renewal.
- It takes nearly 2 weeks to receive your renewed registration, so apply well in advance to the date of expiry.
REGISTRATION RENEWAL IN PERSON
- Locate the SOS branch office in your area.
- Bring the reminder card or current registration, proof of insurance (or PIN) and driver's license along with cash, check or money order to pay for the renewal. Discover cards are accepted at PLUS offices or SUPER!Centers.
FEES
The registration fee is mentioned on the renewal notice sent by the SOS. A $10 late fee is charged for renewing after the date of expiry.FOR CORRECTIONS
- Before renewal, check for errors in the pre-printed vehicle renewal notice that arrived in the mail.
- For correction of any information or change of address, you would have to visit the nearest SOS branch office. Correction of address can also be done by mail.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
