[edit] LOST OR STOLEN LICENSE PLATES

As soon as license plates are lost, stolen or illegible they must be replaced. In order to replace your plates you must:

Regular Series

These are the different types of plates in the regular series for all vehicles: Standard Plate, Great Lakes Splendor Plate, Spectacular Peninsula Plates and Permanent Trailer Plate. Please see the proper application forms for regular series license plates. When you have completed the forms, take them to your local SOS office and submit them with the appropriate fees (see below).

Special Interest Plates

Michigan offers several categories of special interest plates: Fundraising License Plates—including subcategories of University, Special Causes, Patriotic and Support our Troops; Personalized Plates; Veteran/Military Service Plates; and Collector License Plates.—including subcategories of Nonprofit, Standard Collector, Special Cause Collector, University Collector and Veteran Collector Plates. The following is a list of some examples of special interest plates: Central Michigan University, Agricultural Heritage, Patriotic, Support Our Troops, Army Veteran and Medal of Honor. Click on these links to access applications forms for replacing the different types of special interest plates - Veteran License Plates, Fundraising License Plates, Personalized License Plates, which can be ordered online through Michigan's Plate it Your Way system and Collector License Plates. [edit] WHAT TO DO WITH PLATES WHEN BUYING/SELLING A VEHICLE

Under Michigan Law it is NOT mandatory to retain license plates from a vehicle when selling. The plates may remain with the buyer once the ownership of the vehicle has been transferred.
