License Plates in Kentucky

[edit] LOST OR STOLEN LICENSE PLATES

As soon as license plates are lost, stolen or illegible they must be replaced. In order to replace your plates you must:

  • Visit your local county clerk's office.
  • Present proper forms of ID.
  • Hand in any remaining license plates.
  • Fill in an application for replacement plates, available only at the office.
  • Pay the license plate replacement fees of $6.

Regular Series

These are the different types of plates in the regular series: Farm, Standard Motorcycle and Standard Vehicle. Application forms are available at your local County clerk's office only. Fill in and submit with the appropriate fees (see below).

Special Interest Plates

Special License Plates are divided into the following categories: Special Interest, University, Independent College, Military, Military Motorcycle and Miscellaneous. The following is a list of some examples of special interest plates: Amateur Radio, Ducks Unlimited, Street Rod, Firefighter, Louisville Zoo, Kentucky State University, Thomas More College, Air Force Veteran, Purple Heart, Gold Star Mother, Navy Cross Motorcycle and House Trailer. Under Kentucky Law it is mandatory to retain license plates from a vehicle when selling. License plates must be surrendered when selling a vehicle to your local county clerk's office.
