How to Apply for a Motorcycle License in Maine
You can apply for an instruction permit and license at any BMV office in Maine. In order to apply for a motorcycle license you must first apply for an instruction permit.
New Applicants Over 18
Listed below are the requirements to obtain an instruction permit:
1. Visit any BMV office and submit the completed application form.
2. Pass the vision test.
3. Submit your original birth certificate plus one other acceptable form of identification.
4. Take the written examination. See practice tests for more information on the written exam.
5. Submit a $10.00 check or money order, payable to the Secretary of State.
New Applicants Between 15 and 18
In addition to the above requirements, applicants under 18 must have completed a driver's education course.
Instruction Permit (Learner's Permit)
Once you complete the aforementioned prerequisites, you will be given an instruction permit. This permit will allow you to practice driving a motorcycle.
Instruction Permit Restrictions
With your instruction permit you are not permitted to:
- Drive during the evening
- Ride with any passengers
Applying for a Motorcycle License
You will not need to take the road test if you successfully complete an approved rider's education course. Otherwise, you must:
- Mail the road test request card to the main BMV office.
- When your appointment is scheduled, take the road test.
Fees
A permit costs $10 while a license costs $30. If the application expires, some steps to acquiring the permit or license may have to be repeated.
