How to Replace Car Title

Steps to apply for a car title replacement vary depending on which state you live in but generally include the following:

  • Apply for a car title replacement either in person, online, or by mail.
  • Complete the required car title replacement form. Each state has a specific document that is required to get a duplicate car title. Most states allow you to download the PDF versions of the required form from the convenience of your home. Additionally, you may also get the form to replace car title at your local DMV office. Depending on your state of residence, a notarized car title may be mandatory.
  • Applicants must pay the required fee for a lost car title replacement. Drivers who choose to apply for a car title replacement in person must provide a valid proof of identity.

Did you know? If your car title is from a different state than the one you currently reside in, you may only apply for a car title replacement in the state where the car title originates.
