When You Are Required to Get a Duplicate Car Title

There are three instances in which all Massachusetts drivers are required to replace car title credentials with the MA RMV. They include:

  • If you lost your vehicle title.
  • If your car title was stolen.
  • If your auto title was destroyed or damaged to the point where important information is illegible.

How to Replace a Title

Fortunately, the Massachusetts RMV makes the process of replacing car title documents very easy. Although you are not required to present proof of car insurance, there are other documents you may need to submit.They even give you a variety of methods in which you can do so:

  • Online.
  • In person.
  • By mail.


The process to replace lost car titles online is very simple. You just have to make your way to the Duplicate Title page on the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles website and follow the instructions provided. Then, you will be asked to pay the $25 MA car title replacement fee with a credit card (American Express, VISA, Discover or MasterCard) or electronic check.
You will receive your Massachusetts car title replacement in the mail in seven to 10 business days.

How to Replace a Car Title if Out-of-State or On Active Military Duty

In the event that you are out-of-state or on active duty when you need to replace car title documents, you are still required to complete the process. You have the option to either apply online through the Duplicate Car Title page with a major credit card or electronic check, or you can follow the steps to replace your vehicle title by mail:

Just be sure to mention your current address - not your Massachusetts residence - so that your new car title can arrive in the right place.
Note: If you happen to find your car title after you make a replacement request, your original will be deemed invalid. Therefore, you should turn it in to your local NY DMV office. You can also hand your damaged car title to the DMV.

I applied for duplicate title more than 2 weeks ago. Now living in Oklahoma (previously MA).
