How to Apply for a New Driver's License in Idaho

You can apply for a new driver's license at any driver's license office in Idaho. Obtain an Idaho Driver's Handbook to familiarize with the driving rules and regulations.

[edit] NEW DRIVERS AND FIRST TIME APPLICANTS

Following are the basic requirements for applying for an Idaho driver's license:

  1. Applicants must be 15 years or older.
  2. Any individual under 17 should provide parental consent and must complete the Graduated Driver's Licensing program. For additional details, see Beginner Drivers and/or Instruction Permits for Beginner Drivers.
  3. Applicants between 17 and 18 must provide some documents of college or high school enrollment or graduation records from an accredited school.
  4. Everyone must pass the vision, written, and driving tests. See Practice Tests and Driver's Handbook for more information on the written examination. Driver education programs can help individuals prepare for their road test.
  5. Applicants must provide acceptable proof of identification.
  6. Applicants must provide proof of Idaho residency.
  7. Applicants must provide their Social Security Number. If you are not eligible for a SSN, you must provide a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration and also provide proof of legal presence.

[edit] NEW RESIDENTS

Idaho residents holding a driver's license from another state have to surrender the out-of-state license and will need to take a vision test. The written and/or driving skills tests may be waived at the discretion of the examiner. However, like other applicants, new residents must provide proof of identification, residency and presence. Non-US citizens residing in Idaho may apply for an Idaho driver's license, as long as they can provide proof that they are legally authorized to be in the United States, and meet all the other requirements. Note that an Idaho driver's license issued to a foreign national will expire no later than the last date on which they are authorized to be in the United States by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Idaho allows non-US citizen's to drive without an Idaho license upto a year though it is advisable to carry an International Driver's Permit (IDP).
