How to Replace a Lost Vehicle Title in Virginia

You may apply for a duplicate vehicle title if your original title is lost, stolen, or damaged. A vehicle with a missing title cannot be bought or sold, so owners must apply for and obtain a replacement before they can sell their vehicle. You can apply for a duplicate title via phone, online or in person.

WHAT YOU NEED WHEN APPLYING FOR A DUPLICATE/REPLACEMENT TITLE

  1. Complete the Application for Supplemental and Tansfer Liens or Replacement and Substitute Titles, making sure to indicate on the form that you are applying for a duplicate title.
  2. Once completed, you must have the application form properly notarized.
  3. If your original title is damaged or mutilated, you must return the original title when applying for a replacement.

To Replace a Lost Title by Phone:

  1. To request for a duplicate title by phone, dial (888) 337-4782.
  2. Remember that you will be asked to provide your identification numbers so do keep your drivers licence and registration certificate handy.
  3. A fee of $5 must be paid by credit card in this case.

To Apply Online:

  1. You can apply online here.
  2. Be sure to provide the Customer number , Pin number and Date of Birth.
  3. A $5 fee has to be paid by credit card.

To Apply in Person:

  1. Visit a Customer Service Centre.
  2. Bring your registration certificate and your photo Identification or your license.
  3. Complete the Application for Supplemental and transfer Liens or Replacement and substitute Titles, making sure to indicate on the form that you are applying for a duplicate title.
  4. You will have to pay the fee of $5.
