If your North Carolina commercial driver's license (CDL) is lost, stolen, or destroyed, you can apply for a replacement license. While not required by North Carolina law, it is a good idea to notify your local police department if you believe your CDL has been stolen.

APPLYING FOR A DUPLICATE CDL IN PERSON

  1. Visit your local driver license office in order to apply for a replacement CDL in person.
  2. You must present two valid forms of identification.
  3. Submit the replacement fee of $10.
  4. If your current CDL is damaged, you must surrender it at the driver license office when you apply for a replacement.

APPLYING FOR A DUPLICATE CDL ONLINE

  1. You must have a valid, unexpired CDL issued after 1996 and a digital photo on record with the DMV, to order a duplicate CDL using the online service.
  2. You must also know your driver's license number and use an identification number like your social security number, tax identification number or visa number along with your birth date.
  3. Once you enter the license number and your email address, you will be emailed a PIN, which is required to complete the online process.
  4. After receiving the PIN, you will have the opportunity to verify/change your personal information and ordering a duplicate license.
  5. Pay the replacement fee of $10 with a MasterCard or Visa credit card.

Note: The duplicate license will be sent to you within 10 business days.
