Traffic/Driving Schools in Kansas

[edit] TRAFFIC SCHOOLS

In Kansas, there are three reasons why people enroll in traffic schools:

  • After a traffic violation where demerit points were awarded, the court orders the driver to take a course at a traffic/driving school to improve their safe-driving skills.
  • To receive insurance discounts.
  • To receive safe driving points.

These programs, usually of six to eight hour duration, are designed to help you learn defensive driving techniques that will make you a safer driver. There are various programs available in Kansas, some of them online. Contact the Kansas DMV to learn about approved courses.

In case of traffic citations, call the number listed on the back of your traffic ticket for information on whether traffic schools are an option for you offence. The DMV will give you a list of the approved courses.

[edit] BENEFITS

Any driver can enroll in a Driver Improvement Clinic at any time to receive the following benefits:

  • Insurance Benefits - as per Kansas Statute 40-1112a you will get a mandatory reduction in insurance rates for three years once you complete an approved traffic course. By taking a course every three years you will continue to be eligible for premium reduction.
  • Clean up your driving record - you may be able to remove minor offences from your driving record by attending traffic schools.

Note: If the course has been court ordered you may not be eligible for the insurance premium discount.

[edit] WHEN IS IT MANDATORY?

Either the court or the DMV (when notified by the courts) may order you to successfully complete a driver improvement program when you have been convicted of a moving or traffic violation. It is under the court's discretion as to whether or not you will be mandated to take one of these clinics.
