How to Replace a Vehicle Registration in Alaska
If your vehicle's registration card, license plate(s) or stickers are lost, stolen, or damaged, you may apply for a replacement with the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles. While the procedure differs slightly depending on what needs to be replaced, you will usually need to complete the Vehicle Transaction Application.
APPLYING FOR A REPLACEMENT REGISTRATION CARD
You can apply for a replacement registration card if your card is lost, stolen, or damaged by following these steps:
- Complete the application for replacement plates.
- If your current registration card has been damaged, attach the damaged card to the application.
- Explain how you lost your card in the "comments" section of the form.
- Pay the duplicate registration fee, currently $2.

APPLYING FOR A REPLACEMENT LICENSE
If one or both of your license plates are lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for replacement plate(s) immediately. You can obtain replacement plates in person only by visiting your local DMV office.- Complete the application for replacement plates.
- Explain how you lost the license plates if they got stolen in the "comments" section of the form.
- Pay the duplicate registration license plate fee, currently $5 per plate.
- Bring the damaged plate(s) with you, if you still have them.
- Bring your valid Alaska driver's license or State identification card. If you do not have a driver's license or ID card, others forms of identification may be acceptable.
- If your current address differs from the one the Alaska DMV has on file, you must also provide proof of ownership of the vehicle (a copy of your title or registration card), along with a police report, if your license plates were stolen.
APPLYING FOR REPLACEMENT LICENSE PLATE STICKER(S)
If your vehicle's year sticker is lost, stolen or damaged, you are required to obtain a replacement sticker. You can obtain replacement plates in person only by visiting your local DMV office.- Complete the application for replacement plates.
- Explain how you lost the license tabs or if they got stolen in the "comments" section of the form.
- Pay the duplicate license tab fee, currently $5 per tab.
- Bring your valid Alaska driver's license or State identification card. If you do not have a driver's license or ID card, others forms of identification may be acceptable.
- If your current address differs from the one the Alaska DMV has on file, you must also provide proof of ownership of the vehicle (a copy of your title or registration card), along with a police report, if your license tabs were stolen.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Note that you cannot obtain replacement license plates or stickers for vehicles that are not currently registered.
- If you have not received your replacement registration card, license plates, or stickers within eight weeks of submitting your application, contact the Alaska DMV at (907) 269-5551, or send an e-mail including details of the vehicle, your name and address.
