How to Replace a Vehicle Registration in Rhode Island
If your vehicle's registration card, license plate(s) or stickers are lost, stolen, or damaged, you may apply for a replacement with the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. While the procedure differs slightly depending on what needs to be replaced, you will usually need to complete the Application for Registration and Title Certificate, and fill out the respective sections for plate change if necessary.
APPLYING FOR A REPLACEMENT REGISTRATION CARD
You can apply for a replacement registration card if your card is lost, stolen, or damaged by following these steps:
- To apply in person, visit your local DMV office.
- Completely fill in the Application for Registration and Title Certificate and get it notarized.
- Provide proof of insurance of the vehicle.
- If your current registration card has been damaged, attach the damaged card to the application.
- Pay the duplicate registration fee, currently $18.50.

APPLYING FOR REPLACEMENT LICENSE PLATES
If one or both of your license plates are lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for replacement plate(s) immediately. You can obtain replacement plates either in person or by mail. Applying For Replacement License Plates In Person- To apply in person, visit your local DMV office.
- If your license plate(s) are damaged, then you need to surrender your old plates and apply for new plates using the plate change option in the Application for Registration and Title Certificate.
- If your license plates are lost, complete the Wave Plate Order Form or Designer Plate Order Form. The correct application depends on whether you have regular, special interest, or personalized plates.
- If you believe your plates are stolen, you need to submit a copy of the police complaint.
- Bring the damaged plate(s) with you, if you still have them.
- Bring your valid Rhode Island driver's license or State identification card.
- Pay the appropriate duplicate license plate fee, which is currently $21.50.
- If your license plates are damaged, then you need to surrender your old plates and apply for new plates using the plate change option in the Application for Registration and Title Certificate.
- If your license plates are lost, complete the Wave Plate Order Form or Designer Plate Order Form. The correct application depends on whether you have regular, special interest, or personalized plates.
- If you believe your plates are stolen, you need to submit a copy of the police complaint.
- Pay the appropriate duplicate license fee, which varies depending on whether you have regular, special interest, or personalized plates.

APPLYING FOR REPLACEMENT LICENSE PLATE STICKER(S)
If your vehicle's year sticker is lost, stolen or damaged, you are required to obtain a replacement sticker. You should bring along your registration card, driver's license, and proof of insurance to the local DMV office and get replacement license plate stickers.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
