How to Replace a Vehicle Registration in New Mexico

If your vehicle's registration card, license plate(s) or stickers are lost, stolen, or damaged, you may apply for a replacement with the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. While the procedure differs slightly depending on what needs to be replaced, you will usually need to complete the appropriate form for replacing the registration and license plates.

You can apply for a replacement registration card if your card is lost, stolen, or damaged by following these steps:

  1. Head to the nearest local MVD field office.
  2. Complete the appropriate replacement form.
  3. If your current registration card has been damaged, attach the damaged card to the application.
  4. Pay the duplicate registration fee, currently $5.

If one or both of your license plates are lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for replacement plate(s) immediately. You can obtain replacement plates either in person or by phone.

Applying For Replacement License Plates In Person

  1. Head to the nearest local MVD field office.
  2. There is no form to be filled for a regular license plate. However, special license plates do require that you fill in a form at the MVD.
  3. Bring the damaged plate(s) with you, if you still have them.
  4. Bring your current registration card.
  5. If you have regular license plates, the duplicates can be obtained free of cost. However, you have to pay the appropriate duplicate license fee, if you have special interest, or personalized plates.
