How to Replace a Vehicle Registration in Ohio

If your vehicle's registration card, license plate(s) or stickers are lost, stolen, or damaged, you may apply for a replacement with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. While the procedure differs slightly depending on what needs to be replaced, you will usually need to complete the Duplicate Registration Card Transfer.

APPLYING FOR A REPLACEMENT REGISTRATION CARD

You can apply for a replacement registration card if your card is lost, stolen, or damaged by following these steps:

  1. To apply in person, visit your local BMV office.
  2. Complete the Duplicate Registration Card Transfer, Replacement Plates/Validation Sticker Application.
  3. Bring proper Proof of Identity.
  4. If your current registration card has been damaged, attach the damaged card to the application.
  5. Pay the duplicate registration fee as listed on the form, which will vary depending on whether you are applying for a card and/or stickers.

An application for a replacement registration card can be made by mail also. When applying by mail, include the completed application and appropriate fee by check or money order, and mail to:

Ohio BMV also gives the option of ordering a duplicate registration certificate online. Replacement card or stickers will cost you $4.85. The fee to be paid online should include postage charges.

APPLYING FOR A REPLACEMENT LICENSE PLATES

If one or both of your license plates are lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for replacement plate(s) immediately. You can obtain replacement plates either in person, by mail or online.

Applying For Replacement License Plates In Person

  1. To apply in person, visit your local BMV office.
  2. Complete the Duplicate Registration Card Transfer, Replacement Plates/Validation Sticker Application.
  3. Bring proper forms of ID.
  4. If your current license plates have been damaged, surrender them.
  5. Pay the duplicate registration fee as listed on the form, which will vary depending on whether you are applying for card and/or stickers.

An application for a replacement registration card can be made by mail also. When applying by mail, include the completed application and appropriate fee by check or money order, and mail to:
