How to Replace a Vehicle Registration in Washington

If your vehicle's registration card, license plate(s) or stickers are lost, stolen, or damaged, you may apply for a replacement with the Washington Department of Licensing. While the procedure differs slightly depending on what needs to be replaced, you will usually need to complete the appropriate application for registration or plates and/or stickers.

APPLYING FOR A REPLACEMENT REGISTRATION CARD

You can apply for a replacement registration card if your card is lost, stolen, or damaged by following these steps:

  1. To apply in person, visit your local vehicle licensing office.
  2. Complete the required application for duplicate registration card.
  3. If your current registration card has been damaged, attach the damaged card to the application.
  4. Pay the duplicate registration fee, currently $5. If you are applying at a licensing subagent office, it will cost you an additional $4.

APPLYING FOR A REPLACEMENT LICENSE PLATES

If one or both of your license plates are lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for replacement plate(s) immediately. You can obtain replacement plates in person by visiting your local DOL office and following these steps.
  1. Complete the License Plate Replacement Application, indicating the reason you need duplicate plates.
  2. Bring the damaged plate(s) with you, if you still have them.
  3. Bring a valid photo identification document, like your valid Washington driver's license or ID card.
  4. Submit a completed affidavit of loss which is also to be notarized.
  5. Pay the appropriate duplicate license fee, which is currently $24 for two plates.

APPLYING FOR REPLACEMENT LICENSE PLATE STICKER(S)

If your vehicle's year sticker is lost, stolen or damaged, you are required to obtain a replacement sticker. Head into any of the local licensing offices with the registration card and photo ID. You must complete an application for lost tabs and pay a fine of $4.25. An additional $4 should be paid if you are applying at a licensing subagent office.
