Mississippi Drivers Education

Drivers ed in MS is not required unless you want to get a learner’s permit before your 15th birthday. If you are at least 14 years of age, you can complete a driver education course that is approved by the Department of Public Safety in Mississippi. Note that you will also need to fulfill a total of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction, and six hours of behind-the-wheel driving experience.

Mississippi Defensive Driving

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety may require drivers to complete a state-approved defensive driving course for the following reasons:

  • Due to a court order.
  • Due to a business order.
  • To receive an auto insurance premium reduction.
  • For voluntary education.

A driver improvement course lasts from four to eight hours, depending on your program. If you intend to enroll in a Mississippi defensive driving course to help you become a better driver, then you are advised to take your course in a classroom environment.
