Indiana Drivers Education

Indiana teen drivers are required to meet certain minimum driver education requirements prior to obtaining a full driving license.

Residents who are 15 years of age must be enrolled in a driving course in order to obtain a learners permit. Drivers ed is required for drivers license applicants between the ages of 16 years and 90 days and 16 years and 270 days. A state approved drivers ed course must include at least 30 hours of classroom instruction, which may be completed online. The course will take the learner 10 days to complete if he or she spends the maximum allowable hours per day (three) on the course. Furthermore, teen drivers must provide a log of their hours of supervised driving, with a minimum requirement of 50 hours (including 10 hours of nighttime driving) to obtain a driving license.

Indiana Defensive Driving

The Indiana Driver Safety program may be completed by drivers for the following reasons:

  • For a four-point reduction on their driving record.

  • For voluntary/personal education.
