Iowa state ID renewal and the DMV ID replacement are procedures that can be completed through the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) of the state Department of Transportation (DOT). Owners of state ID credentials may be able to obtain an ID card copy or renew ID card credentials via various methods.

How to Renew Your ID Card in Iowa

The procedure to renew ID cards in Iowa can either be completed via the department’s online services website or in person through a local driver licensing site. You may also be able to complete DMV identification card renewal through a self-service kiosk, installed at select locations.

The option to renew ID card online in IA is only available to applicants who meet several eligibility requirements. During your next ID card renewal cycle, you may also be able to obtain a REAL ID card that complies with the regulations of the REAL ID Act by submitting your application in person, if you have not yet done so.

Note: Iowa identification cards are issued with a validity of eight years to applicants of any age.

How to Renew ID Cards in Iowa Online

To successfully complete the Iowa identification card renewal via the internet, applicants will only require their current ID card and a valid credit card for payment purposes. However, before initiating the process of renewing ID card credentials via the internet, state residents must ensure they meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • They are older than 17 years of age.
  • They own a REAL ID credential with a valid photograph.
  • They are renewing ID cards that have 180 days of remaining validity or have not been expired for longer than 14 months.
  • Their state residency and U.S. citizenship is documented in the department’s records.
  • They are not updating their name, birth date or gender information.
  • Their previous IA state ID renewal was not completed via the internet.

To finalize the procedure to renew identification cards, applicants will first be required to log on to the system by providing their full name, date of birth, Social Security Number and ID card number. After locating your records, the system will ask for the submission of the fee payment and process your request. Your new card will arrive by mail within three weeks.

How to Renew ID Cards in Iowa in Person

If you are ineligible to utilize the option to renew ID card online in IA, or you prefer to complete this transaction in person, you can present the necessary items through a nearby DOT location.

When renewing identification cards in person, applicants will be required to submit the fee payment and certain documents, which will vary depending on whether or not they are upgrading a standard ID card into a REAL ID-compliant document.

Applicants who are applying for a REAL ID card during their DMV ID renewal in Iowa will be required to submit proofs of identity and legal U.S. presence, state residency, date of birth and enrollment or exemption from the Social Security program. Note that you will not be required to submit the full document set during subsequent state ID renewals of your REAL ID card.

Note: Certain locations within the state house self-service kiosks that can be used to successfully renew your IA ID credential.

How to Replace Your ID Card in Iowa

The DMV ID replacement procedure can be completed in person through a local driver’s license office. Note that the department does not currently offer the option to replace ID card online. Therefore, regardless of whether you are replacing a damaged, stolen or lost ID card, or you are obtaining a copy of ID card for purposes of updating your information, you will be required to submit the necessary documents and payment in person.

Note that the documentation requirements will vary based on the reason for obtaining the duplicate ID card and whether or not you are replacing a regular credential and upgrading it to a REAL ID card.

How to Replace ID Cards in Iowa in Person

Prior to visiting a DOT office to obtain an Iowa ID card copy, applicants must ensure they have collected the necessary items that apply to their specific circumstances. Applicants for replacement ID card credentials will generally be required to submit an official identification proof and pay the applicable fee.

However, if you are replacing a standard ID card with one that complies with the REAL ID Act when replacing ID cards in IA, you will be required to submit proofs of:

  • Identity, birth date and lawful U.S. stay, such as valid U.S. passports or birth certificates or the corresponding immigration documents.
  • Enrollment or exemption from the Social Security program, such as a Social Security card, a W-2 form or a document proving your ineligibility.
  • State residency, such as vehicle registrations, utility bills or bank statements.

After receiving the payment for the copy of ID card, the department will process your request and issue you a duplicate credential. Note that, in certain circumstances, you may be able to complete the procedure through a driver’s license kiosk.

Iowa ID Card Renewal and Replacement Fees

To finalize the process of replacing or renewing ID cards, applicants will be required to arrange payment for the applicable fees. While the state ID renewal can be completed by paying the standard $8 fee for an ID credential, replacement ID cards in IA are available at the cost of $10.

Note that, depending on the method chosen to renew ID cards, you may be required to pay an addition service fee. For example, state residents completing the Iowa ID card renewal via the internet will be required to pay an additional $1.50 processing fee.
