[edit] TRAFFIC SCHOOLS

In Louisiana, traffic schools are designed to help you learn defensive driving techniques that will make you a safer driver. They also help you get an in-depth understanding of the laws.

People usually enroll in traffic schools for the following reasons:

• Because of court orders after a traffic violation.
• To receive insurance discounts.
• To receive safe driving points.

In Louisiana there is no point system so there is no question of reducing traffic points by enrolling in a traffic school program. As for dismissing traffic tickets as a result of participation in a traffic school program that is entirely up to the court since there is no specific rule as such. It may be an option depending on the seriousness of the offence and your past record. Like in other states there are various traffic courses being offered in Louisiana, some of them online. It is better to contact the Louisiana OMV and get a list of approved courses before you enroll in one. If the course has been court-ordered, please ensure that the court will accept a certificate of completion from an online course, before enrolling in a computer based one.

Some insurance companies may offer premium discounts to drivers completing safe driving courses. Please check with your insurance representative to see if you qualify for this discount. You may not be eligible for insurance premium discounts if the course has been court ordered.

[edit] WHEN IS IT MANDATORY?

Either the court or the OMV (when notified by the courts) may order you to successfully complete a driver improvement program when you have been convicted of a moving or traffic violation. It is under the court's discretion as to whether or not you will be mandated to take one of these courses.
