Making a DMV driving test appointment with the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) helps save time when applying for a new driver’s license. Alaska’s DMV appointment system allows AK drivers to easily set appointments online for many common motor vehicle tasks. You can get an appointment for ID card applications, new car registration applications, vehicle registration renewals and more.

It is important to schedule DMV appointment opportunities online because many AK DMV branch offices are only open for limited days and hours each month. If you wait too long to schedule a road test in Alaska, then it could be another month or longer before a new appointment time becomes available. Review the sections below to learn more about how to make an appointment for DMV related services and how to reschedule or cancel an appointment with the Alaska DMV.

Driving Test Appointments in Alaska

Alaska DMV driving test appointments are not always as easy to schedule as they are in other states. Many drivers have to travel far for a drivers license appointment in Alaska, and most DMV office locations have limited hours of operation.

As the AK DMV appointment system shows, some DMV offices are only open a few days each week or month. Therefore, you must schedule a DMV online appointment as soon as you know you are ready to take your driving test. You must request a behind the wheel test appointment in Alaska through a different online portal than the one that schedules other types of DMV appointments. On the page for getting a road test appointment, you will choose from these types of driver’s license tests:

  • Standard AK driver’s license for non-commercial vehicles
  • M1 motorcycle license
  • M2 motorcycle license
  • Commercial driver license (CDL) Class A
  • CDL Class B
  • CDL Class C

After you select the type of license on the DMV driving test appointment menu, you will select the most convenient local area for you to take your test. Areas listed for appointments include the following:

  • Anchorage
  • Bethel
  • Delta Junction
  • Fairbanks
  • Haines
  • Homer
  • Juneau
  • Ketchikan
  • Kodiak
  • Kotzebue
  • Nome
  • Palmer
  • Sitka
  • Soldotna
  • Tok
  • Valdez
  • Wasilla

Note that although the DMV appointment system lists over a dozen Alaska areas for testing, not all tests are offered at all locations. You can choose another area for your driving test appointment or ask the DMV about alternate third-party testers that may be more convenient for you.

Other Services Covered By the Alaska DMV Appointment System

The Alaska DMV appointment system offers appointments for many types of services. As you will see on the DMV online appointment portals for Benson, Palmer and Fairbanks, DMV appointments are offered for all of the following services:

How to Schedule a DMV Appointment in Alaska

You can schedule AK DMV appointment opportunities as late as 24 hours prior to the test and as early as 60 days ahead of time. As outlined above, to schedule a driving test appointment, choose the type of test you want to take and your nearest location. Once you select a drivers license appointment date, you must complete your applicant information. Enter a valid cell phone number to receive an appointment reminder, pay your fee via credit card and print your receipt.

All other DMV online appointment requests are made through one of the Benson, Palmer or Fairbanks portals. You must enter your phone number to access any of these three online appointment setting services. Once you enter your DMV appointment number, a new window will open showing the types of transactions available at that location. If you need to check DMV appointment availability for more than one type of motor vehicle service, then just choose the primary reason for your visit and the clerk will assist with additional services while you are there.

Sometimes the DMV view appointment service will not be available at the time you want to be placed in line. If this happens or you need another type of help in scheduling a DMV appointment, then call the branch office you wish to visit for assistance.

What to Bring to Your Alaska DMV Appointment

If you are going to a behind the wheel test appointment in Alaska, you will need to bring your valid AK instructional permit. If you do not have an AK instructional permit, then bring two pieces of identification plus your driver knowledge test scores. Bring corrective lenses if you wear them. Alaska road test appointment holders younger than 18 years of age must also bring a completed and signed form of parental consent. In addition, the parent or legal guardian must show their own ID card or driver’s license and court custody documents if applicable.

Road test appointment applicants must provide their current vehicle registration and a printed proof of valid auto insurance. When you make a DMV online appointment for other types of motor vehicle services, you will be told what documents you need to bring to the DMV. Most drivers license appointment transactions require you to bring a valid form of identification and proof of auto insurance.

How to Cancel or Reschedule a DMV Appointment in Alaska

You may reschedule DMV appointment reservations at no cost if you do so 24 hours before your scheduled appointment time. You may reschedule your DMV driving test appointment online or by phone, but the DMV recommends doing so in person if possible. If you need to cancel an appointment DMV made for you, then the department will not refund the test fee you paid at registration. You must check DMV appointment times anew and pay the fee again. Note that you cannot schedule DMV appointments for motorcycle license tests in the winter months.
