How to Handle a Change of Address in Texas

If you are a Texas resident and have changed addresses or plan to do so in the near future, you must have the address information updated on your license, vehicle registration and title certificate. You are also required to notify your insurance provider of your new address.


You must notify the Texas Driver License Division of a change in address within 30 days of moving to a new residence, and to obtain a replacement driver license. Reporting a change of address to your local driver license office is simple, and can be done in person, via mail, or online. If you are a commercial license holder, apply in person at your local driver license office.

Reporting an address change in person:

  1. Locate the driver license office nearest you.
  2. Bring your current license, along with proper identification to prove your citizenship or legal presence.
  3. Pay the fee of $10, in cash, check, or money order payable to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
  4. The process normally takes about 15-20 days.

Reporting an address change by mail:

  1. Complete the change of address form and mail it to the following address:

  1. Include the fee of $10, which can be paid through a check or money order made payable to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
  2. Your replacement license (or a change of address sticker to be affixed to the back of your license) will arrive via mail in approximately 15-20 days.
  3. If you are 18 years or younger, you must change your address in person.

  1. You can report a change of address online by using the online. and following the instructions carefully.
  2. Pay the fee of $10, plus a $1 service charge. All major credit cards are accepted.
  3. The process normally takes about 15-20 days.

Eligibility for online renewal:

You are eligible if the following points apply to you:
  1. You hold a valid license or identification card.
  2. You do not hold a provisional driver license.
  3. You hold a Class C or Class CM license.
  4. There is no change in your physical, mental condition or in your vision.
  5. You have no suspensions or revocations on your record.
  6. You currently stay in Texas and will continue to do so.

The link for change of address implies it will change the address on your vehicle title and registration. It does not. It only changes your vehicle registration address, to do the title you have to go into a county office.
