Florida defensive driving courses are taken by licensed FL drivers who wish to correct issues on their driving record by refreshing their knowledge of lawful driving practices. Drivers may complete a driver improvement program for several reasons including to reinstate a suspended driver’s license, as the result of multiple automobile accident traffic citations or to qualify for a car insurance discount. Drivers education in Florida is a requirement for first-time driver’s license applicants. Beginner drivers applying for a driving permit must first complete the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course (TLSAE) or a qualifying high school drivers ed course. Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) and Drivers Education
Florida drivers ed is a requirement for all first-time driver’s license applicants. Driving classes for licenses with the FLHSMV may be completed either in person or online.
The Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course (TLSAE) is a drivers ed requirement and must be fulfilled by Florida driving permit applicants who have never before been previously licensed. Residents 15 years of age and older are eligible to apply for a learners permit. Driver education courses offered by some county school boards throughout the state may substitute for the TLSAE requirement.

Florida Defensive Driving
Florida driving improvement courses may be taken by drivers for a variety of reasons including the following:
- Reinstating a driver’s license.
- Court ordered.
- Point reduction.
- Insurance premium reduction.
- Voluntary/personal education.
The FLHSMV offers a number of driver improvement programs that are administered by DMV approved traffic schools. Defensive driving courses are four hours in length and may be taken to avoid a suspend driver’s license due to multiple at-fault traffic offenses in a given time period, to reinstate a driver’s license as a habitual traffic offender, or to satisfy the stipulations of a DUI conviction. A mature driver course is also offered to elderly drivers who wish to qualify for a senior citizen car insurance discount. Licensed drivers of any age can take a basic driver improvement course to qualify for a discount on their auto insurance.
