Learner's Permits for Beginner Drivers in New York

Learners Permit

As soon as you are 16 in the state of New York, you can begin the process of getting your NY driving permit. However, there are a number of steps that you must take in order to do so. It is only after you have completed all of the necessary tasks that you can begin driving with your learners permit and practice before applying for a drivers license in New York.

Information Related to Learner's Permit

Age Requirements

There are certain age minimums that must be met, depending on the license to drive or learners permit that you are pursuing. The requirements are as follows:

  • For driving permit, you must be 16 years old.
  • For junior driving license or provisional driving license, you must be 16 years old.
  • For senior driving license (with drivers ed certificate), you must be 17 years old.
  • For senior driving license (without drivers ed), you must be 18 years old.

New Drivers in New York

If you are not originally from the Empire State, but you have a learning permit from another part of the country, it is important to know that your credentials will not transfer. You are required by law to obtain a permit for driving from New York. Furthermore, if you are under the age of 16 and have a drivers permit from another part of the United States, you are not allowed to drive in New York because of age restrictions.

How to Apply for a Driving Permit

As mentioned before, you must be at least 16 years of age in order to even file a drivers permit application in New York. However, the good news is that the state does not ask that you take a drivers ed class beforehand. The state of New York gives you the option of either:

  • Taking and passing a written knowledge exam.
  • Enrolling in a drivers training course.

After you have made your decision, you can head into one of the nearest New York DMV locations and begin the process for applying. Unfortunately, there is no choice available to you other than going in person. You are not given the opportunity to receive a drivers permit online.
Once at the DMV, you must:

  1. Provide 6-points of ID proof, which must include your signature, name, birthdate, and Social Security card.
  2. You can use your birth certificate, U.S. passport, certificate of citizenship, permanent resident card, and various other documents listed by the NY DMV
  3. Fill out and hand in an Application for Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card, which must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
  4. Provide a drivers education certificate, if applicable.
  5. Take the written knowledge exam, if you did not complete driver school.
  6. Pass the vision exam.

Drivers Education in New York

While the state of New York does not require online drivers ed or any other form of formal preparation. The NY DMV highly recommends each young driver's enrollment. These drivers ed classes cover each of the topics of the New York Driver Handbook extensively, preparing all drivers for what will be found on the written exam.

Study Guides and Practice Tests

In addition to driver school, there are a number of supplemental resources that you should integrate into your preparation for the written knowledge exam. Our team of researchers is the best in the field and has created a study guide and a practice permit test to prepare you for the feel and structure of the written exam. Featuring questions taken straight from the New York Driver Handbook, each DMV driving practice test will allow you to:

  • Become more familiar with possible questions.
  • See what topics you are well-versed in.
  • Acknowledge what topics you do not know so well.

By using the Driver's Practice Test, you are guaranteed to pass your drivers written exam the first time. If not, your Driver's Practice Test purchase is on us!

NY DMV Written Exam

Featured on the test will be information on:

  • The various traffic laws
  • Road signs
  • Safety techniques

In addition, all of these topics are included and discussed at length in the New York Driver Handbook. The test will consist of only 20 questions. In order to pass the exam, you must answer 14 of these questions correctly. However, there is no need to fret if you fail on your first attempt. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles allows you the chance to take the permit exam again as many times as is necessary for you to pass.
Keep in mind that you must take your written exam in person.

How to Locate a DMV

Since the Department of Motor Vehicles office is where you must go to take the written knowledge test and apply for your driving permit, it is imperative that you locate a DMV office that is close to you before your exam day. Perusing DMV locations and finding one nearby early on will give you the chance to make an appointment long before your test.

NY Driving Permit Restrictions

While getting drivers permit documents provides you with substantial freedom, there are restrictions that you must be aware of. All drivers with a learners permit must adhere to the following rules:

  1. You must always be accompanied by a 21-year old licensed driver.
  2. You must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving before obtaining your NY driving license.
  3. You must compile at least 15 hours of this time at night.
  4. You are not allowed to drive on any street within a NY park or tunnel, or even bridge in Triborough jurisdiction.
  5. You cannot drive on any parkways in Westchester County either, including:
  6. Cross County
  7. Hutchinson River
  8. Saw Mill River
  9. Taconic State

How to Replace aLearning Permit

In the event that you lose your driving permit in New York, it is stolen from you, or you need to renew it,you are required by the NY DMV to purchase a replacement permit for driving if you want to continue practicing. Fortunately, you have two options to consider. The fee to replace a learners permit is $17.50 and you can submit the payment:

  • By mail
  • In person at a DMV office

NY Graduated License Program

Now that you have your learners permit and have been practicing already, you can begin looking into the next step of the process. Because teen drivers are not as experienced as adults, the state of New York has created a three-step program that allows teen drivers to hone their skills one stage at a time:

  1. Learning permit
  2. Junior driving license or provisional license
  3. Senior driving license

Junior/Provisional Drivers License

As soon as you have held your learners permit for a period of six months, as long as you have compiled 50 hours of supervised driving, you will be able to get a junior driving license. In order to apply, you must visit a local DMV office and provide:

  • Your drivers permit
  • Proof of drivers ed completion
  • A completed Certification of Supervised Driving (http://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv262.pdf)
  • Car registration and proof of car insurance for the vehicle you will be tested in
  • Payment

Car Insurance

While holding a New York permit for driving may not allow you to operate a vehicle without supervision, it is still required that the auto you drive have car insurance. Each state features minimum auto insurance requirements, which must be met. If you are caught driving without meeting the minimum amounts of coverage, you can incur:

  • Drivers license suspension
  • Car registration suspension
  • Sizable traffic fines

i just turned 17 february 4th do i still need a parent to come with me to take my permit test

do i need a parent to come with me to the dmv for my permit test i just turned 17 this month february 4th.

Just moved to NYS from New Mexico a few months ago. I don't have a license or permit of any kind. I am 22 years old. Do I have to get a permit first before I get a license? I just moved here. I can't just have someone 21 or older with a license to drive around with me, that's stupid. I have to go to work. My roommate does not have a license either and we would carpool. I think it's stupid to have to get a permit or a junior license when you're older than 18..

Can someone please tell me how much it costs to.take the.Nyc permit test ? Im 17years old

can someone tell me how much it cost to take a driver permit test in New York City please? i am 20 years old

Basically between 90 to 110 Dollars, all depending whether you are 17 and a half or not.

How can a foreign exchange student take a permit test? I work at a school that offers the permit test and am unsure what he needs to do in order to take the test.

Im 17 years old and just got mailed my DJ license. Im gonna be 18 in 2 weeks. Can i automatically change it to a class D license?

Im 18 and i do not have a permit but i do know how to drive.do they give me a regular license or a permit?

You always have to start with a permit. Get the book and study it and I do believe you can walk into any DMV and just take it. You can't get behind the wheel without it. You need to have your permit for 6 months before taking the road test to get your license. You can take a Drivers Ed. course to help you learn how to drive.

When you are 18 years old you do not need a lerners permit or any kind of drivers ed you can just take the road test. I know this because it happened to me. I forgot to take drivers Ed and I went to the DMV when I was 18 and they told me when your an adult and at 18 you are considered an adult in NY you don't need a permit so they scheduled my road test and I passed and got a class D drivers license not DJ wich is a junior drivers license for anyone who is a minor. But if you take drivers Ed when your 16 you can get your class D license at 17.

if im 18 and i just got my permit do i have to wait those 6 months before applying for the drivers license?

I can not grasp the concept that NY state requires a Social Security card to get a learners permit. It's only a piece of paper with a number typed on it. No one keeps the actual card, its only the number that is important. My daughter has a American Passport, she can leave and enter the country with that alone, yet NYS says she needs a stupid piece of paper with her SSN typed on it to get a drivers permit. I just can't believe it.

Do I have to take my learners permit again in new york state if i have i have one in another state?

yes of course silly Billy.... NY wants their own permits only. u cannot have a permit from another state because its invalid in nys.

I will be 21 in 4 months and I have a class D permit. Do I need to take a 5 hour course and/or road test to get my license?

I am a international students in New York states. I lost my learning permit. And I am not in US now. I plan to come back on FEB. What should I do?

How much does it cost to get your permit? im 17 years young.

How much does it cost to take out a permit? im 17 years young. then how long do i have to wait to take out my license im turning 18 on February.

I am 18 years old and just got my permit, do I have to wait the 6 months and if not how long do I have to wait to go for the road test

Hey so im 17 turning 18 in about 2 weeks. I just got my permit like 3 weeks ago. My friends say when im 18 i dont have to wait 6 months to go for my driving test. is this true?

Yes, it is.

im turning 21 at the end of the month. my permit doesnt expire for another 2 years, but do i have to renew it cuz im turning 21? im getting conflicting answers cuz i cant get my license till after next month due to bills and not having enough money lol

Friend of mine, I've tried, a revolution. Everyone screaming, it's not fair. It's not fair. I'll be the Romeo you play the Juliet. The sun won't set until you appear. Cause I know you're the one my love, my love.

I'm 21 years old and have not had the time to take a road test. My permit just expired though so do I have to take the permit test again or do I just have to go to the DMV and take a new picture or something?

If your learner's permit expired you will have to take the written test again. You dont need to take a new picture because you can keep your old picture if you want. It will be extra money for a new picture and you will have to pay additional fees for license fee, application fee, etc..

Im going to be 18 years old in 3 weeks. i was wondering can I go down to dmv the day you turn 18 and get your full unrestricted regular license or do they have to be automatically mailed to your address?

Im turning 18 in about 3 weeks, im wondering is it possible to get your full license at dmv the day you are 18 or do they have to be automatically mailed to your address?
