Massachusetts defensive driving courses are mandated by the Registry of Motor Vehicles for drivers who are deemed to be in need of safer driving habits. Drivers education in Massachusetts is required for first-time drivers younger than 18 years of age applying for a license to drive. A state approved drivers ed program must be completed by residents between 16 ½ and 18 years of age in order to qualify them for a junior operator’s license. Massachusetts Drivers Education

Drivers ed in Massachusetts is required for new driver’s license applicants younger than 18 years of age. State approved drivers education programs consist of the following components:

  • 30 hours of classroom instruction.
  • 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training.
  • Six hours of in-car observation experience.
  • Two-hour classroom instruction attended by parent or legal guardian of the driving license applicant.

Residents have the option to attend private drivers ed courses that are offered by certified driving schools, or to enroll in high school driver education classes through their local school districts.

Massachusetts Defensive Driving

Drivers must complete a state approved defensive driving program in Massachusetts for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Reinstating a driver’s license.
  • Court ordered.
  • Insurance premium reduction.
  • Voluntary/personal education.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles approves of three different defensive driving courses for drivers to take to either reinstate a suspended driving license or avoid a driver’s license suspension. The type of driving license a resident holds will determine which program he or she qualifies for. The following are state approved defensive driving courses offered in MA:

  • 8-hour Driver Retraining Program.
  • 4-hour Driver Attitudinal Retraining Course.
  • 4-hour State Courts Against Road Rage (SCARR) Course.
