South Dakota does not require a boating license for boaters. The South Dakota Department of Game outlines the requirements for boater safety and education.

The boating regulations of the state, however, require that to operate a boat running with a motor higher than six horsepower, the operator should be at least 12 years old, unless it is an emergency in which case they should be accompanied at all times by an adult, 18 years old or older.

The laws also require that the person operating a boat should not be under the influence of intoxicants. The legal limit of the blood alcohol content (BAC) is 0.08% and if arrested for a higher BAC, harsh penalties may be imposed on the operator, based on the severity of the offense as well as the previous number of similar convictions.

BOATER EDUCATION COURSE

South Dakota does not require you to take any boater education course but it will help to learn how to operate and maintain your boats, the legal requirements for boating, and what to do in emergencies from the Boating Laws and Regulations Handbook. This ensures that boating remains a safe and fun experience.
