How to Register a Boat or Water Craft in Rhode Island
Most new boats must be registered through the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) before they can be sailed. Registrations are valid for two years, except for vessels longer than 30 feel which can request a yearly registration.
VESSELS THAT REQUIRE REGISTRATION
- Any boat plying or docked in Rhode Island waters for over 90 days in a year.
VESSELS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE REGISTRATION
- Boats registered in another state and not being used in Rhode Island for more than 90 days.
- Boats registered in another country temporarily plying in Rhode Island waters.
- Boats owned by the United States, a solitary state, a county, or a municipality.
- A ship's lifeboat.
- Racing boats.
- Rowboats less than 12 feet.
- Any boat that is propelled only by oars or paddles, including canoes, kayaks and ferries.
- Houseboats.
TO REGISTER IN PERSON
- You can register a boat in person by visiting the Rhode Island DEM Boat Registration Office .
- You must bring a completed boat registration application and proof of ownership such as a bill-of-sale, previous registration and title, invoice, bill of lading, certificate of origin, or out-of-state title, and the appropriate registration fee.
