Traffic/Driving Schools in Delaware

[edit] TRAFFIC SCHOOLS

In the state of Delaware, traffic schools are often referred to as ‘Defensive Driving Courses'. There are three reasons why people enroll in the Defensive Driving Courses:

  • After a traffic violation, the court will order the driver to take a course at a traffic/driving school to improve their safe-driving skills.
  • To receive insurance discounts.
  • To receive driving point credits.
This program is designed to help you to learn defensive driving techniques that will make you a safer driver. The Defensive Driving course is conducted at various locations and online courses offered in Delaware. Attitudinal Driving courses or Approved behavioral modification courses are 8-hour courses to be undergone if you have three or more convictions for aggressive driving. If the course has been court-ordered, please ensure that the court will accept a certificate of completion from an online course or regular course, before enrolling in a course.

[edit] BENEFITS

Any driver can enroll in a Defensive Driving Program at any time to receive the following benefits:
  • Insurance Benefits - some insurance companies may offer premium discounts. Please check with your insurance representative to see if you qualify for this discount. Completing the 8-hour Motorcycle experience rider course can get up to 10% reduction in liability insurance. Another 5% cut is possible if you finish the novice course in the past three years.
  • Safe Driving Points - you will receive 3 point credit if you complete a course but it is awarded at the Division's discretion.

[edit] WHEN IS IT MANDATORY?

Either the court or the DMV (when notified by the courts) may order you to successfully complete a defensive driving course when you have been convicted of a moving or traffic violation. It is under the court's discretion as to whether or not you will be mandated to take one of these courses. You will have 90 days to finish the Attitudinal Driving courses or Approved behavioral modification courses after you are convicted for aggressive driving and if it is NOT completed successfully you will lose your driving privilege. The course must be completed within two years for reinstating a license that has been suspended for 14 or more calculated points.

[edit] FEES

Depending on the course, the course or online course costs can vary. The Attitudinal Driving courses or Approved behavioral modification courses cost $100 and you must pay the provider. The Motorcycle experience rider course will cost $100 for those who are not residents of Delaware and will cost $35 for Delaware residents. Please check with individual course providers for more details on individual pricing.
