Once every eight years, Florida residents must renew their drivers licenses. This renewal process helps the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) department ensure that all information on file is accurate and up to date. During a renewal, drivers are required to submit documents verifying their identity and residency.

If you are a U.S. citizen with current information on file, you may qualify to renew your Florida drivers license online. However, this option cannot be used two times in a row. If you renew online now, your next renewal must be completed in person. Learn more below about where and how to renew your license, what documents are needed and how much you’ll need to pay.

Drivers License Renewal Eligibility Requirements in Florida

Florida Drivers LicenseNote: The expiration date of your driving license is located on the front of your card, underneath the issue date

Florida residents as young as 16 years old are eligible to renew their licenses. Since most Florida licenses are valid for eight years, most drivers will not need to renew until they are at least 24 years old.

Instances When You Cannot Renew Your Drivers License in Florida

If your license is lost, stolen or badly damaged and is not within 180 days of its expiration, you cannot renew it. In that case, you must request a replacement license instead.
You also cannot renew a license that has been suspended, revoked or canceled. You must reinstate your driving privileges before requesting a renewal.

How early can you renew your drivers license in Florida?

You can renew your Florida license up to 180 days before its expiration. While you are not permitted to drive with an expired license, you can still renew it after it expires—though a late fee will apply.
If renewing online, be sure to start the process at least 10 days before your license expires, to allow time for delivery.

Florida DMV License Renewal Options

Many drivers wonder, “Where can I renew my drivers license in Florida?” The method you use depends on how you renewed your license last time and whether your FLHSMV record is up to date.
Online renewals are available only if your information is current. If you renew online this time, your next renewal must be done in person.

How to Renew Your Drivers License Online

To renew online, visit the official FLHSMV portal and provide your full name, Social Security Number (SSN), driver’s license number, and email address.
You’ll also pay the renewal fee with a credit or debit card. Once completed, your new license should arrive within 10 days.

How to Renew Your Drivers License in Person

To renew in person, visit any FLHSMV office in Florida. Some offices accept appointments, but walk-ins are also allowed during regular hours.
Because the drivers license renewal form is not available online, you’ll fill it out at the office. You’ll be asked to provide your full legal name, SSN, and mailing address.

If you already have a REAL ID-compliant license, you just need your current license and payment method. If you’re upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time, bring the additional documents listed in the REAL ID section below.

Military & Out of State Renewal in Florida

Military members have special options for renewing their licenses if stationed out of state. These include:

  • Applying for a military extension card. This card allows you to delay your renewal until 90 days after returning to Florida or being discharged from service.
  • Using an out-of-state license temporarily, without needing to renew your Florida license immediately.

Florida REAL ID Drivers License Renewal

As of May 2025, REAL IDs are required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities. You can choose to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant license when you’re renewing.
To upgrade to a REAL ID, you must bring:

  • Two documents proving Florida residency (e.g., bank statements, utility bills, or credit card bills).
  • One document showing your SSN (e.g., a Social Security card or W-2 form).
  • One document verifying your identity (e.g., your current driver’s license or a birth certificate).

Because Florida now only issues REAL ID-compliant licenses, these documents are required if your current license is not yet REAL ID-compliant.

Florida Drivers License Renewal Fees

Florida license renewal fees vary based on when and how you renew:

  • The standard renewal fee is $48.
  • An additional $2 fee applies for online renewals.
  • If your license is expired, you will also be charged a $15 late fee.
